Make sure that learners can pause, stop or hide any moving, blinking, scrolling or auto-updating information such as animations, silent videos, scrolling text etc .
How do I comply?
- This standard applies specifically to any content which appears on a screen with other content, starts automatically and lasts for longer than five seconds.
- For any of this type of content, you must provide a control which allows the learner to pause, stop or, hide the content.
- If the moving, blinking or scrolling are part of an essential activity e.g. an animation which demonstrates how something works, this is exempt.
- If your content flashes more than 3 times per second, it can lead to seizures and will also fail 2.3.1. Three Flashes or Below Threshold (Level A).
Why?
- Many people find moving, blinking or scrolling content distracting.
- People with cognitive impairments, particularly those with attention deficit disorders, may be particularly sensitive to moving, blinking or scrolling content.
- Any content which moves or updates, can cause a problem for anyone who struggles to read text quickly, or finds it difficult to track moving objects.
- Moving text can also cause problems for screen reader users, because the content can disappear, before the screen reader has had time to read it.
